Perspectives when a movie comes out of a great reading text.

Hmmm. This week the movie 'The Martian' by Andy Weir began it's run at Melbourne cinemas. Is there a benefit to encouraging students to read a book if the movie comes out too quickly? What do you think?

The Martian is a wonderful introduction to a method of Sci-Fi writing that could be called 'Sci-NonFi', as the adventures and misadventures of our hero are extremely believable and reliably reported in a combination of the first and second person.

However, the hype of the movie may have gotten in the way of highly capable students accessing the story for themselves. Hence the question...

Is there a benefit to encouraging students to read a book if the movie comes out too quickly?
